The Hooper Children | Raleigh Lifestyle Portrait Photography

A few months ago I ran into an old neighbor & good friend of mine at Target.  We had lost touch after she moved away, and I was thrilled to reconnect with her.  We spend many hours watching the kiddos splash in the baby pool, enjoying long summer afternoons and frosty beverages!

She has four amazing children, one that I remember as a newborn and one I hadn’t even met yet.

My friend hired me to take pictures of  her youngest daughter, who wants to be the next big thing in the actress world.  I have to tell you after working with her, I know she has a VERY good chance!!

We met  at their home & began my session with Miss M., the aspiring movie star.

What an absolute sweetheart & shining star!!

.

She was very excited about her dress – what little girl doesn’t like to twirl?

.

We then headed inside to take some pics with her big sis, in their beautiful & colorful bedroom.

.

You just can’t take pics in a bedroom without a jumping on the bed shot!

We then decided to head to the neighborhood park & lake area.

Big brother joined us, and so glad he did.

The last time I saw him I think he was in diapers.  Man, time flies!

Handsome young man, don’t you think?

.

A little sibling fun :)

Big sis Miss E has quite a personality too!  A lot of fun, and always smiling.

.

We found the jackpot Camellia shrub in full bloom …

.

We then headed back to the house to finish up the shoot with some super fun confetti shots!

Work it little Miss M!!

.

.

Although the focus on this next shot is soft, it is one of my favorites because of pure joy that comes from it!

.

And of course smiley Miss E had her turn with the confetti…

Check out these big brown eyes!

.

I laugh every time I look at this image :)

.

And this one too!

I don’t know how many times I can say this, but I am SO lucky to have such truly incredible clients.

These kids were SO good and really opened up to me, making my job my dream job :)

Thank you Dawn for sharing your babes with me!

p.s. Mom ordered four 16×16 metal prints for a wall display.  You bet I will blog it as soon as I get a photo.  The metals are FABULOUS!!

Sweet Girls of Cotillion | Preview | Raleigh Portrait Photography

Yesterday I spent a sunny yet chilly afternoon with six beautiful girls, all dressed up on their way to their first year Cotillion ball.  An exciting time in their lives.

We had so much fun, and they were real troopers considering it was in the 40’s and breezy!

Enjoy the preview image, lots more to come.

.

And just for fun, here’s a behind the scenes snap my wonderful assistant Mom took …

Tuesday Photo Tip | Eye Catchlights

Hello!  Today I will share one tip on how to achieve bright eye catchlights.  (There are many tips, this is just one that I use a lot)

Catchlights add life to a portrait, & can help draw attention to the subject’s eyes.

.

I pulled my youngest away from her basketball for five minutes so I could snap these sample images for you.  End of day, sun is down but still bright outside.

Image A.  Pretty face, nice breeze, but not too much sparkle in the eye :

ISO 640  f/2.5  1/800th

Here’s the pull back shot of where she was standing.  She is facing South, so the sun is setting to her right (our view, left)

.

Image B.  I had her squat and look UP at me.  Why?  The light source is UP.

Face your subject TOWARDS the light source.

Someone once told me think of the sun and the sky as a big flash.  I always remember that!

ISO 640  f/2.5   1/800th

Can you SEE the difference?  Those white spots in her iris are from the evening sky.  Her skin is more luminous.

Here’s the drop back image for this shot (except she turned her head the other way lol) :

.

So next time you are out shooting, try having your subject look towards the light source and see what you get.  Shoot shoot shoot!!

I’d love to see what you get – leave me a comment & I’ll check it out!

Please do share any tips that YOU may have in the comments, I’d love to hear and share them.

Thanks!

~Kathy
